South Unit Bison Restoration

The National Park Service has called for scoping comments from the public concerning alternatives for the South Unit Bison Restoration Project on Badlands National Park, South Dakota.  The South Unit is on Oglala Sioux Tribal Reservation Land, and the bison herd would be jointly managed by the NPS and OST.Public scoping meetings will be held on the Pine Ridge Reservation and in Rapid City the week of April 21, 2014.  Addresses for submitting your comments, along with meeting times and locations, can be found in the Park Service scoping brochure. The major obstacle to bison restoration on these public lands is coming from existing cattle grazing interests, including grazing permittees from the Oglala Sioux Tribe.  *  *  *  *  *Please encourage the National Park Service to cancel these existing cattle grazing permits, compensating existing permittees if appropriate, and to proceed with the bison restoration project on the South Unit of Badlands National Park on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.See More
